April Ross

April Ross was one of only a few women beach volleyball players who have won medals at more than one Olympics. Alix-Klineman will compete with April Ross in Tokyo to win her third gold in the next few days. Ross also hopes to get her first Olympic medal. Perhaps this is her only chance at winning, as she's 39 old. However, she's confident that top honors are firmly within reach. Ross stated to NBC Boston that if they play their best, or play a great game and they are able to play well, the team will be able to win the gold medal. "I'm planning to test a little luck." Ross was born in the city of Costa Mesa, California in the year 1982. Her parents and her sister resided there. Ross's athletic endeavors began at Newport Harbor High School where she participated in several different sports. Her prep athletic career included indoor volleyball, as well as basketball, track and running. While she did well when playing indoors but it was apparent that her skills were above average. According to her bio her high school days, she played volleyball as an outside setter (middle blocker) and setting (outside blocker). In recognition of her accomplishments she was awarded the Gatorade Award for National Player in 1999. Additionally, in 2000, she was awarded the Orange County Athlete of the Yr for volleyball. Ross is playing with Klineman since 2017 but her beach game was well-established long before that. In reality, she was a winner of numerous major events using two partners, one of whom is a volleyball icon. Ross teamed up along with Jennifer Kessy from 2007-2013, and also was Klineman's trainer. Along with Kessy, Ross won the World Championship in 2009 while competing internationally. The duo eventually captured an Olympic silver medal during the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Misty Maytreanor's legendary team as well as Kerri Jennings were the winners of gold. Ross Jennings was Walsh Jennings partner in fate as Maytreanor resigned. They went on to compete for the bronze medal in beach volleyball at the Rio Olympics in 2016 along with Walsh Jennings. Ross began her college time with the Trojans at USC after her high school days. This was years before Ross hit the sand and turned pro. This was an impressive performance for Ross during her time at the college level. When she was a freshman at the school in 2000 she fought her way to Pac-10 and NCAA All-American Freshman of Year accolades. She also earned an All-American. In addition, she helped her Trojans to reach the Final Four. She was devastated by a personal tragedy during her second year, but she was able to make it an All-American again. Through her two final years of participation in the Trojans program, she guided the team to win a national championship each year. The individual accomplishments of her have established her place as a legendary volleyball player. She was awarded the Honda Sports Award 2003-04 for the nation's best female collegiate player. Ross majored at USC in International Relations. Margie Ross was never able to watch her daughter's rise to the beach volleyball spotlight. Ross's mother passed away from breast carcinoma in 2001. Ross had just become an undergraduate student in the second year at USC. This meant that Ross continues to be close to her parent who died. Margie is a constant source of inspiration for her, both at and off the beaches.
